Bringing Back the ClassicsOne of the realities of book publishing has always been economies of scale. For book printing to be cost-effective thousands of copies of a book must be produced and the publishers must be reasonably sure of their ability to sell those copies in order to recover their costs. Because of this, publishers are often forced to put a book out of print when it still generates interest, simply because there is not enough demand to justify a full print run. Happily, recent technological advances are changing this, and as a result we are excited to announce the launch of our latest publishing initiative—New Catalyst Books. New Catalyst Books is an imprint of New Society Publishers, designed to keep books in print that have enduring value in the field of sustainability. In the coming months, look for classic titles from John Seed, Joanna Macy, Kirkpatrick Sale, Chellis Glendinning, Sharif Abdullah and many more! Check out www.newcatalystbooks.com for more information. What Price Happiness?

Shift Happens!
The average conventional household toilet uses approximately 3.5 gallons of water per flush and accounts for approximately 30% of household water use. Whether you do not have access to a sewer or septic system, or simply want to dramatically reduce your water consumption, a composting toilet system could be the ideal solution. Coming in July, Carol Steinfeld and David del Porto's The Composting Toilet System Book is the definitive resource, covering all aspects of ecological waste management options from design and installation to maintenance and greywater use. Make a sustainable choice and flush with pride!
Flower Power!
What if the water that runs down your drain could instead help to grow plant-based fuel, fiber, construction materials, habitat and landscapes? It can! Carol Steinfeld and David del Porto's Reusing the Resource will show you how to put your wastewater to work by using plants to stabilize, clean and filter it to be used again to flush toilets, nourish plants, etc. Off press next month, this essential guide is packed with practical ideas to save money and the environment. Turn your greywater into gold! New Catalyst BooksReconnecting with Mother Earth
Our first New Catalyst release is Thinking Like a Mountain – a classic of the deep ecology movement co-authored by John Seed, Joanna Macy, Pat Fleming and Arne Naess. Deep ecology is based on an environmental philosophy that values all species equally and views the human species as a part of the Earth and not separate from it. The book presents readings, meditations, rituals and workshops designed to foster our connection with the natural world through the creation of a Council of All Beings, and is essential reading for anyone committed to healing our planet and healing ourselves.
The Mindful Life
Also now available through New Catalyst Books, Joanna Macy's autobiography Widening Circles is the powerful and inspiring life story of one of this era's most revered environmental and spiritual leaders. Spanning three continents, this fascinating account provides a deeply personal perspective on Joanna's philosophy and transformative work.
