One Less Brain

US Department of Transportation Secretary Mary Peters delivered a crushing blow to her own credibility during a PBS appearance on "NewsHour With Jim Lehrer". During the interview Peters claimed that projects like bike paths and trails "are really not transportation" and as such should be excluded from receiving federal transportation dollars from gas taxes. Not transportation? Pardon me? Predictably, the One Less Car crowd is outraged, with angry responses popping up all over the blogosphere. The League of American Bicyclists has issued an Action Alert here with a link to contact Secretary Peters directly. For my part, I hope that such an appalling gaffe on the part of the Secretary will ultimately serve to raise the profile of cycling issues, and perhaps encourage more people to get out of their cars and pedal their way to a greener world.
