Bike to Work Week BC 2011: May 30 – June 5

The mission of Bike to Work Week BC sure put a smile on my face:

"To experience the joy of an ever increasing number of people safely commuting by bicycle."

Talk about passion!  Not the just joy of riding to work but of seeing ever increasing numbers of people safely biking to work.  I am a committed bike to work commuter but really, it is nothing to brag about as I live close enough to work that I rarely even need rain pants in the rain. The commuters I really admire are the ones that put in a hard hour cycling in Manitoba with snow studs in their tires.  Are there any of those? Maybe that is why the Winnipeg Bike to Work Week is on June 24th.

American readers, check out the The League of American Bicyclists National Bike Month.    Never mind if you missed the bike week in your city, you can do it again in solidarity with your cold northern neighbours! The League of American Bicyclists has a great webpage where you can look up all kinds of bicycling facts about your city.  Did you know that three percent of Seattle's commuters use bikes while Washington DC is #27 in the list of bike friendly cites with an average of 6300 cycle commuters?  Do you know which city is the number one biking city in the US?

Comment below by June 5th with your answer to be entered in a random draw for a free copy of The Practical Cyclist: Bicycling for Real People by Chip Haynes.

For those of you living in BC, you can register for Bike to Work Week here.  Happy Biking!  I will think of you joyfully as I hop on my bike Monday AM.  I might even do an extra lap around the block in your honour!
