Tra La La - Off to the Fair Again

Sara and Ingrid braved the crazy rain at 3:30 am today on their way to Mother Earth News Fair in Topeka, Kansas, the home base for Odgen Publications.  Looks like they will be able to shed their Pacific Northwest rain gear soon though.  Weather in Kansas will be warm and sunny all weekend!

If you call the Midwest home, you don't want to miss this. Mother Earth News Fairs are fun-filled, family-oriented sustainable lifestyle events. New Society authors featured at this fair will be:

Sylvia Bernstein

Sylvia Bernstein the president and founder of The Aquaponic Source will be teaching her method of aquaponics as covered in her book, Aquaponic Gardening: A Step-by-Step Guide to Raising Vegetables and Fish Together.

Dan Chiras, respected educator and the author of 30 books on residential renewable energy and green building, will be presenting five workshops ranging from nuclear power and fossil fuels to renewable energy for homes and businesses.

Dawn Combs

Dawn Combs is an ethnobotanist with over 20 years experience in women's health issues. She will be speaking on adrenal health as well as leading a medicinal herbal walk and teaching ethnobotany to kids.

Cindy Conner, permaculture educator and founder of Homeplace Earth, will be speaking about her book Grow a Sustainable Diet: Planning and Growing to Feed Ourselves and the Earth.

Pam Dawling is a contributing editor with Growing For Market magazine. She will share her tips on growing for 100's of people on a few acres, with talks on cold storage for vegetables, crop rotation and fall vegetable growing.

Darrell Frey is the owner and manager of Three Sisters Farm. He will  share his always popular Bioshelter design and permaculture principles from Bioshelter Market Garden: A Permaculture Farm.

Oscar H. Will III

Oscar H. Will III, GRIT Magazine's own farmer, scientist, and author will show everyone how to can sweet corn - the perfect topic for Kansas! 

Victoria Redhed Miller, writer, photographer and homesteader, is branching out.  In addition to her poultry talk, there will be a sneak peak of her upcoming book with a workshop on distilling liquor at home.


Jessica Kellner, another Odgen favourite and editor of Mother Earth Living magazine,  will be entertaining the kids at the Treehouse Stage with herbal crafts.

Jean-Martin Fortier

Jean-Martin Fortier, farming superstar, will share his secrets for how to make a living farming 1.5 acres!

Albert Bates, author, climate change activist and biochar expert, will be demonstrating his biochar stove and sharing The Biochar Solution.

Sukita Reay Crimmel and James Thomson will be getting muddy when they share the dirt on floors in Earthen Floors: A Modern Approach to an Ancient Practice.

Doug Garrett

Doug Garrett, CEM and founder of Austin Energy’s Residential and Multi-Family Energy Conservation will share Seven Steps to a Green, Healthy and Efficient Home from his book Green Home Building:Money-Saving Strategies for an Affordable, Healthy, High-Performance Home.
