World Oceans Day on Gabriola

by: Alina on 06/09/2014

World Oceans Day on Gabriola Island at Descanco Bay was a hit! Many of Gabriola’s environmental organizations were present to demonstrate their stewardship and dedication to the Salish Sea. The groups included Save Our Shores, Gabriola Rescue of Wildlife Society, Gabriola Streamkeepers, Help the Kelp, Sustainable Gabriola and others. The sunny Sunday also featured a variety of workshops and presentations; visitors participated in the Forage Fish Walk & Talk, a Divers & Sealife Viewing, a GROWLS Seal Pup Talk and a Streamkeepers Tour.

Save Our Shores also presented a memorable, hands-on simulation game showing how oil tankers weave through the many coastal islands to reach Kitimat. It proved impossible to guide the marble through shallow shores without hitting rocks or islands. Who would have thought?

Thanks to all of the community volunteers and the Descanso Bay Regional Park for organizing such an eye-opening event. Oceans generate the oxygen we breathe, feed us, regulate our climate, clean the water we drink, offer potential medicines and provide a home to millions of creatures. Our direct link with the ocean means that we’ve got to keep working together to protect them.
