New Society Publishers Earns B Corp Certification

by: EJ on 06/28/2016

It's official. New Society Publishers, a leader in sustainable publishing for over 30 years, is pleased to announce yet another step in walking our talk. On June 23rd, we became a Certified B Corporation.  For a company that has always had a mandate that goes beyond the single bottom line of profit, B Corp Certification was a logical step. We care deeply not only about what we publish (our overall list continues to be widely admired and respected for its timeliness and quality) but also about how we do business.

New Society Publishers is an industry leader both in Canada and the US on environmental issues related to book publishing. We also take care of our staff and issues of quality of life for everyone. We consult with our authors throughout the process from conception, to packaging, and marketing. We believe in the work that we take on and in the authors that we bring to the marketplace. It is no wonder our B Corp Certification score was extremely high!

“It is very gratifying to receive the B Corp Certification.   New Society Publishers has been ahead of the curve for years and it is wonderful to have this certification which honors and respects the significant investment we have made to our company, staff, the publishing industry and the environment.” said Director of Operations Julie Raddysh.

New Society Publishers has published over 400 books on topics ranging from climate change to progressive parenting. Our best-selling books surpass 50,000 copies, including the groundbreaking title Our Ecological Footprint:Reducing Human Impact on the Earth. “When writers have something meaningful to say about sustainability, it is important for them to have a publisher who supports their philosophy,” explains co-founder Judith Plant.

With this certification, New Society joins a team of Certified B Corporations which is committed to using the power of business to solve social and environmental problems. There are over 1,600 Certified B Corporations from more than 120 industries in 60 countries with one unifying goal – to redefine success in business. The performance standards B Corps meet are comprehensive, transparent and verified. They measure a company’s impact on all its stakeholders (workers, suppliers, community, customers and the environment) and are legally required to consider the impact of their decisions not only on their shareholders, but also on their stakeholders.
