I really want to turn much of my yard into a garden, but I have a lot of trees and tree removal is expensive. Given that I have only a few sunny patches and a lot of shade, are there some crops that I could grow successfully? I am in the mid-Atlantic region of the U.S.

I;m trying to be innovative here. Have you thought of some growing in pots that could augment your plant beds, moving them around with the sun. Lots of work, but homegrown food is good. You could build something wheeled to easily move them with. Or growing vertically in the space you have. I've grown cantalopes, cucumbers, etc vertically and it works. You'd have to build up the soil more and water more so that all could get their share. you could use pots vertically if you built some wooden structure that would hold them.
