Ending the Love Affair with the Automobile. Thanks Katie!

It's the start of the so-called "summer driving season" and fuel prices have hit record levels. So has the share of small car sales - as of April, one of five cars sold in the U.S. was a small car, the biggest percentage ever. Although that still means four of five cars sold are medium to big, at least things are going in a better direction!

When Leonard Doyle of The Independent phoned me for a comment on the trend, I told him I thought the increase in small cars was positive, but that I get more excited when I see boosts in transit use, bicycling and walking. Summer - despite the "driving season" moniker -- is a terrific time to use all these alternatives to cars.
